1. What is the play about?

Based on Mark Twain's classic novel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," BIG RIVER is a musical that follows the exploits of the irrepressible Huck and his friend, Jim, a runaway slave, as they explore life along the Mississippi River set in the 1840s. Along the way they meet the uproarious King and Duke, Tom Sawyer, and Huck's father, the sinister Pap Finn.

2. Is it just for people that know sign language?

No. BIG RIVER interweaves music, sign language, voice and dance with powerful storytelling to create an event suitable for people of all ages.

3. Was it on Broadway?

Yes, twice. The original Broadway production in 1985 won 7 Tony Awards. This revival was performed at the Roundabout Theatre Company's American Airlines Theatre in 2003 and was nominated for 2 Tony Awards - Best Revival of a Musical and Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical (Michael McElroy, "Jim").

4. What cities are the national tour going to?

You can view all BIG RIVER tour dates on our National Touring section of our website. Our site is updated with the most current tour information.

5. What if my city or local theatre is interested in having Big River perform?

As of now, the current booking status of the tour is posted on our website. No further dates have been announced past June 2005.  If interested, please have your theatre venue representative contact us at 818-762-2998 or via email at info@deafwest.org and we can share their contact information with the lead producer and booking agency for the tour.

6. How do I buy tickets for an upcoming show?

Tickets for can be purchased by calling the phone number or accessing the website next to the city/date as listed on our website. Deaf West Theatre is not able to sell tickets to any of the productions of BIG RIVER.

7. How do I contact the tour and/or performers?

E-mails sent to info@deafwest.org can be forwarded to the touring company of BIG RIVER. Please indicate if this is going to a particular person.

8. Will the second company in Washington DC be a new cast?

The Big River cast for Ford's Theatre in Washington DC (beginning March 2005) will be an entirely new cast from the current production on tour.

9. Where and when will there be auditions for the second company of Big River?

Auditions for the second company of Big River for the Ford's Theatre, Washington DC production have been conpleted.

10. Is there a VHS or DVD copy of the touring production?

Yes, there is a copy of the 2003 Broadway production on file at the Theater on Film and Tape Archive of the New York Public Library for The Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. However, the copy is available for on-site viewing only to theater professionals, students and scholars. There are no plans to distribute or sell a copy of the production to the general public.

11. How can I get a CD version of the touring production?

At this time, there are no plans to sell a musical CD of the Deaf West Theatre production of BIG RIVER. However, you are able to purchase the 1985 original Broadway production of BIG RIVER on tour or at many musical outlets.

12. How do I get a copy of the souvenir program?

At this time, the souvenir program and other Big River merchandise can only be purchased at the theatre where the production is currently performing. Please contact www.theatreofthestars.com for more information.

13. How can I purchase a Deaf West Theatre T-shirt?

Deaf West Theatre T-shirts can be purchased on tour or by completing the T-shirt Request Form and returning to Deaf West Theatre. All shirts are short sleeve with the Deaf West Theatre logo on the front center. Colors include white, gray, burgundy, black and bluestone.

14. How do I know if there will be any presentations or workshops happening while the show is in town?

All information about any presentations or workshops that accompany the tour can be found on our website.
