A New Version
By Wendy Kesselman
Directed by
Michael Unger
Deaf West
Theatre is proud to present My Sister
in This House, a new version written
especially for Deaf West by Wendy Kesselman
and directed by Michael Unger. Inspired
by a true incident in 1930s France, this
haunting play explores class struggle, identity,
and what happens when the need for connection
and companionship is ignored and abused.
The play is based on the true story of the
Papin Sisters, who suffered through an abusive
childhood and an estranged workplace in
1930s France. Their bizarre tale inspired
many writers of the era, including Jean
Genet and Jean Paul Sartre.
The themes
of the play are accentuated by the unique
theatrical experience that Deaf West Theatre
is known for: here, deaf and hearing actors
perform in a multilingual setting of American
Sign Language, spoken English, and open
captioning. The divide between the deaf
and the hearing worlds provide added thematic
weight to the world that the Papin Sisters
live in. Join us for a thrilling, innovative
evening of boundary-stretching theater.
