THANK YOU TO ALL WHO SUPPORTED THE SUCCESSFUL NATIONAL TOUR OF "BIG RIVER".

The national tour of Big River and its educational programs are funded by a generous grant from the

Atlanta's Theater of the Stars, in association with Dallas Summer Musicals, Houston·s Theater Under the Stars, and Boston's Wang Center for the Performing Arts, is delighted to announce the touring production of BIG RIVER, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, music and lyrics by Grammy-award winner Roger Miller, Book by William Haughtman, adapted from the novel by Mark Twain. Deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing actors perform each role in a synchronized ballet of speaking and signing. Spoken English and American Sign Language are interwoven with music, dance, and storytelling techniques from both hearing and deaf cultures into a "third language" creating a unique theatrical event -- the adventure of a lifetime! The thrilling score is a mix of Cajun, gospel, folk, country and blues songs. The winner of six L.A. Ovation Awards and five L.A. Drama Critics' Circle Awards, including Best Musical from both, is a slice of pure Americana that has left critics struggling for superlatives and audiences scrambling for tickets!

BIG RIVER EDUCATION OUTREACH PROGRAM

Deaf West Theatre is currently assisting theaters across the country to ensure educational components are available to each venue to reach their maximum educational outreach potential for the BIG RIVER production. The Discovery Journal Study Guide captures the literary value of Twain' masterpiece, creating a better understanding and appreciation of deaf language and culture, and revealing the positive lessons of accepting cultural differences that are integral to this unique telling of the story.

Deaf West Theatre is currently developing a strong web presence that will also be utilized in the classroom and in the homes to support this effort with the help of MCI.

The educational support materials are available to schools and students who may be interested in attending the play. This document is a pdf e-version of the study guide including production photos, cast testimonials, insight into ASL translations and exploration of the play's positive message of breaking down cultural barriers and more.

DEAF SENSITIVITY TRAINING PACKET

Deaf West Theatre has created this Deaf Sensitivity packet for theatres to help break the ice between their staff and the deaf and hard of hearing artists and audiences that they will have contact with. Theatres can utilize this packet as a guide in breaking down the barriers of communication; to assure full accessibility and the opportunity and inclusion of Deaf and Hard of Hearing theatre goers of all ages at your cultural venue. These materials will enable venues to foster an appreciation of deaf culture and Sign Language Theatre (in addition to the introduction of American Sign Language 101).
